Credo che una parte dei vescovi ci consideri proprio degli "allocchi". Se davvero il sopracitato cardinale, nato il 26 febbraio 1936, voleva smentire le sue (come dire?) infelici dichiarazioni, doveva prendere carta e penna subito o alzare la cornetta del telefono. Invece che cosa ha fatto? Ha lasciato montare la polemica sui giornali, in televisione e su internet. Parla ora? Troppo tardi, troppo poco, troppo comodo.

chi riprenderà questa smentita? a parte il Corriere dei piccoli e il Messaggero di S. Antonio, intendo?
Se si evitasse di sproloquiare non sarebbe poi necessario smentire. E' così semplice che lo capirebbe mia nipote di quasi tre mesi, ma no questi cardinaloni attirati dal plauso dei media non lo capiscono.

- A lot of buzz in the Anglophone blogosphere about recent remarks on women priests made by the Patriarch of Lisbon, Cardinal Jose de la Cruz Policaropo, in a story by Andrea Tornielli published in the VATICaN INSIDER. The headline was "The Patriarch of Lisbon: "There are no theological reasons for excluding women from the priesthood" - but the story itself begins this way:
"There will be women priests «when God wills», for the moment it is better «not to raise the issue». But there is «no fundamental obstacle», from «a theological perspective», for women to say mass on the altar. It is, instead, a «tradition» that dates back from the time of Jesus." This was said by Cardinal Jose da Cruz Policarpo, seventy-five year old Patriarch of Lisbon, who has just been confirmed for another two years at the head of the diocese of the Portuguese capital.
True, Policarpo says the question is open for discussion and he does not think John Paul II's formal statement against women priests is the final word on the issue, but his presentation does not sound ideological... Although, of course, I will hold to Joseph Ratzinger's view of the theological reasons against women priests, thank you!
This kerfuffle proves two things all over about the sorry state of journalism today. 1) Even something as serious and prestigious as the VATICAN INSIDER cannot resist using a misleading headline to catch attention; and 2) many bloggers, who ought to be more responsible, apparently did not bother to read beyond the misleading headline!
